Scorsese Is Back! Well, sort of...

I went to see The Departed over the long weekend. It is Scorsese's latest since his last effort, The Aviator. Every Scorsese release is an event for me. As the years have gone on though less and less so. The last film of his I was really mad about was Kundun.
Now I have kind of had a problem with the Scorsese\DiCaprio love fest that has been going on the last few years. Gangs of New York, The Aviator and now The Departed. I thought Scorsese had lost his mind repeatedly casting the babyfaced actor. I just never thought he looked old enough to play the roles he was cast in. He is older than me but looks about 23. I was pretty impressed by him in The Departed however. He gives a gritty performance as an undercover cop infiltrating Jack Nicholson's crew. Nicholson is fantastic in this role as an unscrupulous Irish mob boss. All the characters on both sides are Irish. This is kind of like Scorsese's Irish Goodfellas, though it pales in comparison to the 1990 classic. There are a few Scorsese moments where you can see his influences (Powell & Pressburger) by and large though he is director for hire on this. I do recomend this film as it is an acting tour de force. The Departed is a remake of The Hong Kong film, Infernal Affairs. I must check out the original ASAP.

Excellent flick - saw it a few weeks ago and I agree that DiCaprio does well in this role - I have never been a Leo fan and never understood ole Marty's recent attachment to this "kid," but he proves himself worthy in this role.

An unexpected highlight for me was Mark Walhburg. I just loved his "smaht"ass Southie character. He's just so damn good.

Nicholsen, as always, was tops.

Agreed - Goodfellas is still the best - hard to top. Who can top Joe Peschi "do you think I'm a clown -- do I amuse you?"
